Follow the money
Free means no monthly subscription. Transaction costs still apply. Your fee-payer setting determines what gets added to the client’s checkout and what comes out of your deposit.
Illustrations on Free in USD, using its 9.9% LVL2 booking fee and a US domestic online card processing model of 2.9% + $0.30. This is not a live checkout quote.
Amounts are rounded to the cent. Client-paid processing is grossed up because the processor also charges on the added fees. With split fees, processing shares can differ by a few cents. The deposit is advance payment toward the tattoo, not extra revenue. A reduction in client-paid fees reduces checkout friction for your client—it does not create cash savings for the artist.
Pro’s 0% LVL2 booking fee does not remove processing fees. Under the same card assumptions, an artist-paid $100 Pro deposit leaves $96.80 before other costs.
LVL2’s merch fee is a share of net profit, never of the gross sale price. Net profit is defined as the retail sale price minus base item production cost, shipping, and applicable taxes/processing fees:
Net merch profit = gross retail sale price − item production cost − shipping and taxes
For example, on a $30.00 t-shirt with $15.00 base production cost and $5.00 shipping ($20.00 total costs), net profit is $10.00. On Free (30% share), LVL2 takes $3.00 and the artist keeps $7.00. On Plus (20% share), LVL2 takes $2.00 and the artist keeps $8.00. On Pro (10% share), LVL2 takes $1.00 and the artist keeps $9.00. If there is no profit on an item, no platform fee is charged. Actual production and shipping costs depend on Print-on-Demand item specifications and customer delivery destination.
Full transparent breakdown of every cost component across LVL2 plans (2026-09-28 review, USD):
| Fee Rail | Payer | Calculation Base | Timing | Exclusions | Remains on Pro? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | Artist / studio owner | Flat monthly tier rate ($0 Free, $39 Plus, $99 Pro) | Charged monthly at start of billing cycle (Free is $0 always) | Sales taxes, optional add-on tools | Yes |
| Deposit booking fee | Client (default), artist, or split (workspace configurable) | Deposit amount only (9.9% on Free, 4.5% on Plus, 0% on Pro) | Assessed at time of deposit checkout | Final session balance, cash or in-person payments, tips, travel fees not part of deposit | No (0% booking fee) |
| Payment processing | Follows workspace fee-payer setting (client grossed-up passthrough, artist net deduction, or split) | Total card charge processed via Stripe Connect (modeled at 2.9% + $0.30 for US domestic online cards) | Deducted at transaction settlement | Cash payments, in-person non-card payments; international cards and currency conversion carry provider surcharges | Yes |
| Optional instant payout | Artist / account owner requesting payout | Transfer amount (typically 1% or provider rate, subject to minimums) | Deducted at instant transfer execution | Standard scheduled bank payouts (which carry no instant transfer fee) | Yes |
| Refunds & dispute chargebacks | Artist / account owner | Disputed or refunded deposit amount plus applicable processor dispute fees | Upon formal dispute notification or refund execution | Won disputes where fees are reversed by processor | Yes |
| Merch share of profit | Artist / seller (deducted from net profit) | Net profit = gross sale price minus base item production cost, shipping, and applicable taxes/processing (30% Free, 20% Plus, 10% Pro) | Deducted upon Print-on-Demand order fulfillment and clearing | Base garment/item production cost, carrier shipping, customs, customer returns | Yes |
These examples exclude subscription charges, taxes, tips, discounts, currency conversion, international-card surcharges, refunds, disputes and optional payout charges. They show estimated deposit proceeds, not bank arrival or take-home profit. Actual costs depend on the payment method, region and account terms; check the checkout breakdown and provider terms.

A practical cost check
Tattoo booking software costs more than its monthly subscription. Compare subscriptions, payment processing, booking fees, optional payout charges, add-ons and merch fees—and identify who pays each one. LVL2's plans are Free, Plus and Pro. Free refers to the subscription price; applicable transaction fees still matter. Estimate monthly value using time saved and incremental appointment contribution, minus artist-paid costs. A deposit applied to the final tattoo price is advance payment, not extra revenue.
Estimate monthly value as time value plus contribution from additional completed appointments, minus incremental artist-paid costs. Time saved has value only if you can use it; it is not automatically cash earned. A lower client-paid booking fee is not an artist cash saving. A deposit applied to an appointment is advance payment, not additional appointment revenue.
Monthly net value = hours saved × value per hour + additional appointment contribution − additional artist-paid costs
Illustrations in USD per month. These are assumptions, not measured LVL2 results. Scroll the table to see every cost and outcome.
| Scenario | Time value | Extra contribution | Artist-paid cost | Net value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Illustrative improvement | 2 hours × $40.00 = $80.00 | $60.00 | $39.00 | $101.00 |
| No activity on Free | 0 hours × $40.00 = $0.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 |
| Upgrade with no improvement | 0 hours × $40.00 = $0.00 | $0.00 | $39.00 | −$39.00 |
The paid examples assume moving from Free to Plus at its displayed monthly USD subscription (or Pro at $99/mo), no other incremental costs, and one additional appointment contributing $60 after its variable costs in the first example. Replace those assumptions with your own evidence. Include setup time, payment processing you bear, optional payouts, taxes and other incremental costs before deciding. If a cost is unknown, the result is incomplete. No reduction in no-shows or increase in earnings is guaranteed.
The plan table above separates subscription cost, deposit booking fees and merch profit share. A merch profit share is not a percentage of the gross sale price. Check the order’s production, shipping, tax and payment deductions before estimating what you keep. Read the deposit and payout guide for the difference between a client payment, available funds, and a payout arriving at your bank.
